IYL 2015 Special Session at the Opening Ceremony of AMOP 2015 in Saudi Arabia

The 2nd International Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics (AMOP) Meeting recently took place at the University’s main campus at Al-Jouf Region of Saudi Arabia on 31 March – 1 April, 2015. To celebrate the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies (IYL 2015), during the opening ceremony, a special session devoted to IYL 2015 was organized in collaboration with “Ibn al Haytham” International Working Group (IWG).

The meeting was jointly organized by The Saudi Physical Society (SPS), AMOP division and Al-Jouf University which has taken a leading role in promoting research and innovation, as well as facilitating effective and beneficial scientific networking nationwide.

The SPS is a young association founded in 2003 to fulfill the needs of researchers, educators, and students in physics and related fields within the kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It is a professional national organization of an international dimension that works for the development and advancement of physics, physical sciences, and their practical applications. It strives to improve professional skills of its members through effective training, communication, and scientific networking. The 2nd International Meeting of the SPS AMOP consisted of several plenary lectures, four workshops, and many talks and posters sessions and more activities spanning the entire two days of the conference.

A special session devoted to IYL 2015 was organized in collaboration with “Ibn al Haytham” International Working Group (IWG). This session dedicated to highlight the importance of the history of light and light-based technologies in our life was particularly animated by Prof. Azzedine Boudrioua, the coordinator of the IWG and Prof. Zahid Khan from Jamia Millia Islamia - Central University, New Delhi (India) and member of the IWG.

Prof. Azzedine Boudrioua gave a talk regarding the best ways to celebrate the contribution of Ibn Al Haytham and Arab Scholars to optics. Prof. Zahid Khan elaborated on reflections on light: from antiquity to the modern era. Prof. Nurdoğan Can, from Jazan University and also a member of the IWG, coordinated AMOP participation in this historic IYL 2015 international effort and took in charge the exhibition of the laser fountain built by the LPL from Université Paris 13 (France) that was available to this meeting.

Prof. Suhail Zubairy from Texas A&M University (USA) also presented a very brief history of light: celebrating the IYL 2015.

About IYL 2015

The International Year of Light and Light-Based Technologies (IYL 2015) is a global initiative adopted by the United Nations (A/RES/68/221) to raise awareness of how optical technologies promote sustainable development and provide solutions to worldwide challenges in energy, education, agriculture, communications and health.  With UNESCO as lead agency, IYL 2015 programs will promote improved public and political understanding of the central role of light in the modern world while also celebrating noteworthy anniversaries in 2015—from the first studies of optics 1,000 years ago to discoveries in optical communications that power the Internet today.  The IYL Global Secretariat is located at the Abdus Salam International Centre of Theoretical Physics (ICTP).

The Founding Partners of IYL 2015 are the American Institute of Physics (AIP), the American Physical Society (APS), the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft (DPG), the European Physical Society (EPS), the Abdus Salam International Centre of Theoretical Physics (ICTP), the IEEE Photonics Society (IPS), the Institute of Physics (IOP), Light: Science and Applications, the lightsources.org International Network, 1001 Inventions, The Optical Society (OSA) and the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE).

Patron Sponsors include Bosca, the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD), Royal Philips Lighting, Thorlabs and UL.
