Opening Ceremony of the International Year of Light 2015 in China

The Opening Ceremony of the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies 2015 (IYL 2015) in China was held at China Hall of Science and Technology Beijing, China on 26 February, 2015. This conference was sponsored by the Chinese Optical Society (COS), the Chinese Physical Society (CPS), the China Instrument and Control Society (CIS), and the Chinese Society for Measurement (CSM). The government officials of the China Association of Science and Technology, the academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the scientists of the Chinese universities and research institutes attended the Opening Ceremony.

The Opening Ceremony also celebrated the anniversary of the 100th birthday of Prof. Daheng Wang, one of the important academic founders of modern optics research in China, and the founder of COS. Delegates deeply cherished the memories of Prof. Daheng Wang and respectfully commemorated his outstanding contributions to the optics enterprise of China.

The activities of IYL 2015 were introduced during the conference. The aim of the of IYL 2015 activities is to promote the research of Optical Science, the application of light-based technologies, and the popularization of knowledge of optics.

Two public lectures on optics were given in January 2015 by COS. Ten esteemed scientists, including academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, were invited to report on optics and optical technology applications, and more than 1000 college students and high school students attended the lectures.

In order to promote the activities of IYL 2015, COS established the IYL website in China: http://www.lightchina.org.cn/.

About IYL 2015

The International Year of Light and Light-Based Technologies (IYL 2015) is a global initiative adopted by the United Nations (A/RES/68/221) to raise awareness of how optical technologies promote sustainable development and provide solutions to worldwide challenges in energy, education, agriculture, communications and health.  With UNESCO as lead agency, IYL 2015 programs will promote improved public and political understanding of the central role of light in the modern world while also celebrating noteworthy anniversaries in 2015—from the first studies of optics 1,000 years ago to discoveries in optical communications that power the Internet today.  The IYL Global Secretariat is located at the Abdus Salam International Centre of Theoretical Physics (ICTP).

The Founding Partners of IYL 2015 are the American Institute of Physics (AIP), the American Physical Society (APS), the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft (DPG), the European Physical Society (EPS), the Abdus Salam International Centre of Theoretical Physics (ICTP), the IEEE Photonics Society (IPS), the Institute of Physics (IOP), Light: Science and Applications, the lightsources.org International Network, 1001 Inventions, The Optical Society (OSA) and the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE).

Patron Sponsors include Bosca, the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD), Royal Philips Lighting, Thorlabs and UL.
