Bosca is a Patron sponsor of the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies 2015 (IYL2015), citing that “Light plays a fundamental role in the entirety of the production process of our spumante”. To celebrate the IYL 2015, a new advanced lighting system and a permanent exhibit of Light and Sounds have been installed in what they like to call their "Underground Cathedrals," rendering them de facto the Photonic Cellars! Bosca has managed to bring a new light to their historic Underground Cathedrals that from now on will coexist with the most state-of-the-art light technology.

The exhibit, which will run permanently starting the day after, will feature at its opening a round table on the importance of light in all areas of human knowledge. Moderated by Piero Bianucci, a well-known scientific journalist who recently published his book on light, the round table will feature physicists John Dudley, chairman of the IYL 2015 Steering Committee and immediate past-President of the European Physical Society and Joseph Niemela, head of the Office of External Activities of the  Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste and IYL Secretariat, along with philosopher Giulio Giorello, professor of Philosophy of Science at the University of Milan and head of  the publication Scienze e Idee- and oenologist Vincenzo Gerbi, professor of Oenology and Oenography at the University of Turin. The round table is designed to help participants understand how light is paramount in many diverse aspects of our lives, in addition to those related to Bosca’s activities.

About Bosca

The Underground Cathedrals of Spumante, as the Company’s Ancient Cellars have become known throughout the world, are the silent witnesses of a story that dates back almost 200 years. Bosca was established in 1831 in Canelli, and since then it has expanded and flourished. Ever since, Bosca has combined experience and tradition with innovation made possible by science and technology. The art of producing high-quality spumante, vermouth and wines handed down by older generations of the Bosca family cannot be replaced; however, continual improvements in all phases of the production process through modern innovation is essential in order to build on the success of the past and to continue to offer the best products possible. Research is very highly valued in this otherwise static industry.

“We live with the firm conviction of always having to look a step ahead. It can be a new product, it can be a new market. What works is already obsolete. This is our creed.  Yet, at the same time, we produce new products that are in many ways unforeseen evolutions of our traditional spumante, and which become icons themselves, thanks to our heritage, our history, and our Cellars” - CEO Pia Bosca reveals.

In 2014, UNESCO has honored the Bosca Underground Cathedrals with the World Heritage Site award. In the list of "Vineyard Landscapes of Piedmont: Langhe-Roero and Monferrato", the fiftieth award given to Italy, the Bosca Cellars are specifically shown as a site of merit in a territory with an undisputed capacity for excellence, history and tradition. “This recognition fills us with pride in sharing with the whole World this gem that we have been treasuring through the generations”.

About IYL 2015

The International Year of Light and Light-Based Technologies (IYL 2015) is a global initiative adopted by the United Nations (A/RES/68/221) to raise awareness of how optical technologies promote sustainable development and provide solutions to worldwide challenges in energy, education, agriculture, communications and health.  With UNESCO as lead agency, IYL 2015 programs will promote improved public and political understanding of the central role of light in the modern world while also celebrating noteworthy anniversaries in 2015—from the first studies of optics 1,000 years ago to discoveries in optical communications that power the Internet today.  The IYL Global Secretariat is located at the Abdus Salam International Centre of Theoretical Physics (ICTP).

The Founding Partners of IYL 2015 are the American Institute of Physics (AIP), the American Physical Society (APS), the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft (DPG), the European Physical Society (EPS), the Abdus Salam International Centre of Theoretical Physics (ICTP), the IEEE Photonics Society (IPS), the Institute of Physics (IOP), Light: Science and Applications, the lightsources.org International Network, 1001 Inventions, The Optical Society (OSA) and the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE).

Patron Sponsors include Bosca, the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD), Royal Philips Lighting, Thorlabs and UL.
