Opening Ceremony of the International Year of Light 2015 in Spain

On February 16th the Opening Ceremony of the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies (IYL 2015) in Spain took place in Barcelona, at the Poliorama Theatre of the Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts of Barcelona, with the participation of 500 attendees.

The ceremony was one of the starting points for a series of events taking place all over Spain during this year to highlight the impact of light and light-based technologies in areas such as energy, education, health or communications.

Prof. María Josefa Yzuel, chair of the Spanish Committee for the celebration of the International Year of Light, announced the activities program to be developed in Spain all through 2015.

It’s an opportunity that we must not let get away: we must promote the knowledge of how the science of light and light-based technologies improves our daily lives.

Three renowned lecturers offered their different viewpoints on the role and impact of light in our lives. Dr. Ignacio Cirac, director of the Theory division of the Max-Planck Institut für Quantenoptik (Germany), reviewed the evolution of quantum optics stressing the ability of teleportation of light and the development of quantum computers.

Dr. Caterina Biscari, director of the ALBA Synchrotron (Spain) emphasized the properties of synchrotron light to see the inside of matter and its application in several fields, such as life-, materials- and environmental-sciences and arts.

Dr. Jeroni Nadal, coordinator of the Retina department and the macula unit at the Clínica Barraquer (Spain) explained how to attenuate low vision problems by means of artificial vision with retinal implants.

Eugene Arthurs, CEO of SPIE, also participated in the opening ceremony and emphasized that this year is also an opportunity to bring light to developing countries. The event was enlivened by a performance of cellist Lluís Claret.

About IYL 2015

The International Year of Light and Light-Based Technologies (IYL 2015) is a global initiative adopted by the United Nations (A/RES/68/221) to raise awareness of how optical technologies promote sustainable development and provide solutions to worldwide challenges in energy, education, agriculture, communications and health.  With UNESCO as lead agency, IYL 2015 programs will promote improved public and political understanding of the central role of light in the modern world while also celebrating noteworthy anniversaries in 2015—from the first studies of optics 1,000 years ago to discoveries in optical communications that power the Internet today.  The IYL Global Secretariat is located at the Abdus Salam International Centre of Theoretical Physics (ICTP).

The Founding Partners of IYL 2015 are the American Institute of Physics (AIP), the American Physical Society (APS), the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft (DPG), the European Physical Society (EPS), the Abdus Salam International Centre of Theoretical Physics (ICTP), the IEEE Photonics Society (IPS), the Institute of Physics (IOP), Light: Science and Applications, the lightsources.org International Network, 1001 Inventions, The Optical Society (OSA) and the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE).

Patron Sponsors include Bosca, the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD), Royal Philips Lighting, Thorlabs and UL.
