Algeria celebrates IYL 2015 and Ibn al Haytham’s Optics

As a part of the Algerian IYL 2015 program and under the aegis of the General Direction of Scientific Research and Technological Development (DGRSDT), the University of Guelma, located in the East of Algeria, organized on October 25th 2015 a special day dedicated to light and optical telecommunication in partnership with "Ibn Al Haytham" International Working Group (IWG) and with the support of the Optical and Photonics Algerian Society (OPALS).

This day was organized by Prof. Rachid Hamdi (Vice Rector in charge of international affairs) and Mr. Said Feddaoui in charge of the cooperation with the participation of students of the faculty of science and engineering. The opening ceremony was chaired by Prof. Mohamed Nemancha, the Rector of the University, who emphasized the importance of celebrating the IYL 2015 with a special concern about the contribution of Ibn al Haytham to optics. Prof. Nemancha highlighted in his opening talk the life and the work of Ibn al Haytham as an example to fellow. Prof. Azzedine Boudrioua, the coordinator of Ibn al Haytham International Working Group (IWG), presented the Arab’s Optics with a focus on the contribution of Ibn al Haytham as the father of optics and the scientific method. Moreover, during this event, Prof. Mourad Zghal, Chair of the Tunisian Optical Society, highlighted the issue of supercontinuum sources and the interest of using optical fibers. Dr. Djalal Bendimerad and Prof. Badr-Eddine Benkelfat from Institut Mines-Télécom,  Télécom SudParis- France, gave an important talk describing the use of light in very high bit rate optical transmission systems.

Eventually, during this important event, several Memorandums of Agreement (MOU) have been signed between the University of Guelma and the Tunisian Institute of Telecommunication as well as with the Algerian Institute of Telecommunications. An important MOU has been also signed between the Algerian and Tunisian Optical Societies to develop regional cooperation.

About IYL 2015

The International Year of Light and Light-Based Technologies (IYL 2015) is a global initiative adopted by the United Nations (A/RES/68/221) to raise awareness of how optical technologies promote sustainable development and provide solutions to worldwide challenges in energy, education, agriculture, communications and health.  With UNESCO as lead agency, IYL 2015 programs will promote improved public and political understanding of the central role of light in the modern world while also celebrating noteworthy anniversaries in 2015—from the first studies of optics 1,000 years ago to discoveries in optical communications that power the Internet today.  The IYL Global Secretariat is located at the Abdus Salam International Centre of Theoretical Physics (ICTP).

The Founding Partners of IYL 2015 are the American Institute of Physics (AIP), the American Physical Society (APS), the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft (DPG), the European Physical Society (EPS), the Abdus Salam International Centre of Theoretical Physics (ICTP), the IEEE Photonics Society (IPS), the Institute of Physics (IOP), Light: Science and Applications, the lightsources.org International Network, 1001 Inventions, The Optical Society (OSA) and the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE).

Patron Sponsors include Bosca, the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD), Royal Philips Lighting, Thorlabs and UL.
