Symposium on Optical Fibers as a part of IYL 2015 celebration in Morocco

As a part of the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies 2015 (IYL 2015) celebrations, the AOB group organized the first symposium on Optical Fiber on Smart Buildings on 20 October 2015 at the Hayat Regency in Casablanca (Morocco). The deployment of high speed and broadband optical fiber networks is considered an important economic development issue in Morocco.

The meeting consisted of Plenary, thematic workshops and meetings animated by experts who addressed the opportunities offered by today’s new technological solutions for buildings and sustainable construction.

The program also included a set of case studies on new cities that are emerging in Morocco including the city of Zenata, that of Benguerir and the AUDA agency experience. The debates and discussions of the symposium addressed the best architectural practices and urban techniques. For instance, Prof. Pierre Lecoy (Centrale-Supélec, laboratoire ETIS - UMR 8051 - ENSEA/Université de Cergy Pontoise - France) highlighted the recent development of the FTTH by taking as an example the case of France. Prof. Azzedine Boudrioua, the coordinator of Ibn al Haytham International Working Group (IWG), took this opportunity to emphasize the contribution of Arab scholars in particular Ibn al Haytham to modern optics. He also discussed recent issues of optical network as an important tool for economic development. Moreover, during this event, Dr. Jean Paul Ngome Abiagia, Assistant Program Specialist at the UNESCO, highlighted the accomplishment of IYL 2015 celebration around the world and presented a UNESCO video.

Finally, during this important event, a round table has been organized where several leaders from industry and officials shared their experiences and discussed issues to the deployment of the optical network in Morocco.

About IYL 2015

The International Year of Light and Light-Based Technologies (IYL 2015) is a global initiative adopted by the United Nations (A/RES/68/221) to raise awareness of how optical technologies promote sustainable development and provide solutions to worldwide challenges in energy, education, agriculture, communications and health.  With UNESCO as lead agency, IYL 2015 programs will promote improved public and political understanding of the central role of light in the modern world while also celebrating noteworthy anniversaries in 2015—from the first studies of optics 1,000 years ago to discoveries in optical communications that power the Internet today.  The IYL Global Secretariat is located at the Abdus Salam International Centre of Theoretical Physics (ICTP).

The Founding Partners of IYL 2015 are the American Institute of Physics (AIP), the American Physical Society (APS), the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft (DPG), the European Physical Society (EPS), the Abdus Salam International Centre of Theoretical Physics (ICTP), the IEEE Photonics Society (IPS), the Institute of Physics (IOP), Light: Science and Applications, the lightsources.org International Network, 1001 Inventions, The Optical Society (OSA) and the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE).

Patron Sponsors include Bosca, the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD), Royal Philips Lighting, Thorlabs and UL.
