The International Year of Light at the VerCiência 2015 Exhibition in Brazil

The 21st International Exhibition of Science on TV – VerCiência 2015 joins the celebrations of the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies 2015 (IYL 2015). On 19-25 October 2015 the general public in Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Brasilia and about 30 other cities in Brazil will be able to see videos and TV programs from different countries about LIGHT during VerCiência 2015. This annual festival of science on TV is one of the main events of the 12th National Week of Science and Technology promoted by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation of Brazil, which will have the theme "Light, Science and Life".

The organizers of VerCiência 2015 festival are inviting producers and broadcasters of science TV programs related to the subject “LIGHT” to submit free entries of their productions until the end of July. The selected productions will be screened in public sessions of the festival alongside programs produced by the BBC (UK) and WGBH (USA), well known for the high standards of their TV documentaries, such as “Horizon” (BBC) and “NOVA” (WGBH).

About VerCiência

This is an international festival of science TV programs which happens in in Brazil every year in October, since 1994.

The main objective of the VerCiência festival is to promote the dissemination of scientific culture through television. It is a non-competitive, non-commercial and non-profitable television festival, with free admission to the general public in all sessions.

The annual VerCiência exhibitions take place simultaneously in several Brazilian cities, including Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Brasília, in the third week of October, and consist in the public screenings of a selection of science TV programs produced in Brazil and other countries. Lectures on science communication and on the production of science programs for TV and the internet are also given by experts from Brazil and abroad during the exhibition.

About IYL 2015

The International Year of Light and Light-Based Technologies (IYL 2015) is a global initiative adopted by the United Nations (A/RES/68/221) to raise awareness of how optical technologies promote sustainable development and provide solutions to worldwide challenges in energy, education, agriculture, communications and health.  With UNESCO as lead agency, IYL 2015 programs will promote improved public and political understanding of the central role of light in the modern world while also celebrating noteworthy anniversaries in 2015—from the first studies of optics 1,000 years ago to discoveries in optical communications that power the Internet today.  The IYL Global Secretariat is located at the Abdus Salam International Centre of Theoretical Physics (ICTP).

The Founding Partners of IYL 2015 are the American Institute of Physics (AIP), the American Physical Society (APS), the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft (DPG), the European Physical Society (EPS), the Abdus Salam International Centre of Theoretical Physics (ICTP), the IEEE Photonics Society (IPS), the Institute of Physics (IOP), Light: Science and Applications, the International Network, 1001 Inventions, The Optical Society (OSA) and the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE).

Patron Sponsors include Bosca, the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD), Royal Philips Lighting, Thorlabs and UL.
