The keynote speakers included:
Dr. Flavia Schlegel, Assistant Director-General for Natural Sciences, UNESCO
Prof. John Dudley, Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) and IYL 2015 Steering Committee chair (moderator)
Mr. Wolfgang Boch – Head of the Photonics Unit of the European Commission
Dr. Lawrence S. Goldberg, Senior Engineering Advisor in the Division of Electrical, Communications and Cyber Systems, Directorate for Engineering, at the National Science Foundation
Dr. Yanne K. Chembo, ERC Starting Grant Laureate, Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) Paris and the African Physical Society
Dr. Reinhard Pfeiffer, Deputy CEO, Messe München International
The event was attended by science advisors and attachés from selected member states of UNESCO, Nobel Prize Laureates and scientific dignitaries, conference attendees, CEOs from exhibiting companies at the LASER World of Photonics Trade Fair, Presidents and CEOs of relevant associations and CEOs and Presidents of IYL 2015 Founding Partners / Patron Sponsors.
The ceremony opened with welcoming addresses from J. Dudley and R. Pfeiffer.
In her opening address, Flavia Schlegel stressed that “the sciences of light may provide many solutions for the challenges that we face in our society.” Dr. Schlegel also highlighted the great opportunity that IYL 2015 brings to tackle issues of great importance, especially, in education.
W. Boch gave an overview of the European perspective of photonics. “Photonics has given us Internet, lasers, smartphones, these are just three examples to see importance of photonics in our economy", said W. Boch. “Twenty per cent of world photonics production is made in Europe. The European Commission is convinced that photonics will shape the future of industry and society,”
L. Goldberg's speech was focused on the IYL 2015 efforts in the United States of America. He stressed “optics and photonics are also fields where breakthrough discoveries can be turned into technological advances.”
Y. Chembo talked about the African Perspective of the International Year of Light. He explained that impact of photonics in Africa is mainly focused on: optical telecoms, solar energy, healthcare and Research & Training. “The priority for 2015 has to be training in photonics technology. Let’s be the storytellers light!”, he encouraged all the scientists that were present in the audience.
J. Dudley closed the ceremony stating that “IYL 2015 is about everyone and we all should be involved because that is only way we can make a difference.”

About The World of Photonics Congress
The World of Photonics Congress covers the entire world of photonics in a single event: Scientific conferences with plenary and joint sessions and a practice-oriented lecture program address all aspects of optical technologies. The different conferences organized during the World of Photonics Congress are: The European Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics and the European Quantum Electronics Conference (CLEO® / Europe-EQEC) organized by the European Physical Society (EPS), IEEE Photonics Society and The Optical Society (OSA); Lasers in Manufacturing (LiM 2015) organized by WLT (German Scientific Laser Society), European Optical Society (EOS) Topical Meetings organized by EOS; Optical Metrology organized by SPIE, European Conferences on Biomedical Optics (ECBO) organized by SPIE with the support of OSA.
About The Laser World of Photonics
The LASER World of PHOTONICS, is the International Trade Fair for the Laser and Photonics Industry that has been held in Munich since 1973. It combines technology with industrial application sectors for the widest variety of industries and uses. Every two years, key players and decision-makers come to Munich to meet at one of the industry’s most important marketplace. The fair gives participants from more than 70 countries a complete overview of all topics that pertain to optical technologies on 42,000 square meters of exhibition space.
About IYL 2015
The International Year of Light and Light-Based Technologies (IYL 2015) is a global initiative adopted by the United Nations (A/RES/68/221) to raise awareness of how optical technologies promote sustainable development and provide solutions to worldwide challenges in energy, education, agriculture, communications and health. With UNESCO as lead agency, IYL 2015 programs will promote improved public and political understanding of the central role of light in the modern world while also celebrating noteworthy anniversaries in 2015—from the first studies of optics 1,000 years ago to discoveries in optical communications that power the Internet today. The IYL Global Secretariat is located at the Abdus Salam International Centre of Theoretical Physics (ICTP).
The Founding Partners of IYL 2015 are the American Institute of Physics (AIP), the American Physical Society (APS), the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft (DPG), the European Physical Society (EPS), the Abdus Salam International Centre of Theoretical Physics (ICTP), the IEEE Photonics Society (IPS), the Institute of Physics (IOP), Light: Science and Applications, the lightsources.org International Network, 1001 Inventions, The Optical Society (OSA) and the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE).
Patron Sponsors include Bosca, the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD), Royal Philips Lighting, Thorlabs and UL.
