International Association of Physics Students announces International Year of Light Activities and Sponsorship

The International Association of Physics Students (IAPS) is delighted to announce its official partnership in the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies 2015 (IYL 2015).

IAPS is a student-run association with members in more than 40 countries of the world.  From undergraduate through doctoral level, over 50000 physics students are represented by IAPS through 15 national committees, 8 local committees and a number of individual members. IAPS will support IYL 2015 directly through becoming an Associate sponsor of the international activities of the year and will also provide in kind contributions by developing educational material for the website. In addition, IAPS will arrange for international student volunteers to assist at the official IYL 2015 Opening Ceremony.

Chairman of the IYL 2015 Steering Committee John Dudley comments:

It is fantastic to see IAPS join the worldwide community in helping the activities of IYL 2015.  I have recently been lucky enough to see at first hand the enthusiasm and energy of IAPS in organizing their annual conference, and I am certain that they will play a central role in 2015 in spreading the messages of IYL. I hope also that the dedication of IAPS will act as an example for senior scientists to get involved in IYL as well, and especially to support any IAPS activities that are planned in their own countries.

During 2015, IAPS will work with its international network of students to initiate seminars and activities worldwide, focussing especially on activities to connect the science of light with the public and students alike.  IAPS president Matthias Zimmermann adds:

The International Year of Light is a unique opportunity for our members from different countries of the world to collaborate and show their enthusiasm about physics and light to the general public.
