Indonesia celebrates IYL 2015 and Ibn al Haytham

Special programs devoted to the celebration of the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies 2015 (IYL 2015) and Ibn Al-Haytham’s work recognition were organized on 4-6 August 2015 by Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) Surabaya Indonesia. In conjunction with the 1st International Seminar on Science and Technology (ISST), which was held on 5 August 2015 at ITS Postgraduate Theater, Prof. Azzedine Boudiroua (University of Paris 13/ Coordinator Ibn Al Haytham IWG) gave a keynote lecture on science and technology of light at the opening of ISST with a highlight of the main concepts and the recent development of photonics technology as well as future challenges. This seminar was organized as an event for current research results dissemination mostly from graduate students with a total number of participants of about 150 people.

Meanwhile, the SPIE ITS Student Chapter took part in the celebration by organizing a lecture on “nanotechnology and nanophotonics” by Prof. Boudrioua on 4 August 2015. The Student Chapter also organized a photography exhibition with the theme of “Light for Education” on 5 August 2015. These events were attended by students with the aim to introduce the importance of science and technology of light and its applications in daily life.

A studium generale on “Re-inventing the spirit of scientific exploration from the Islamic golden age’s scientists” was given by Prof. Boudrioua and Prof. Agus Purwanto (ITS) on 6 August 2015. This event was organized as an understanding that Indonesia is a biggest Islamic nation in which the scientific tradition of the golden age can be learned. Prof. Boudrioua presented “Ibn Al-Haytham’ Optics” with emphasizing on contribution from the Islamic and Arab scholars to the development of Optics. Prof. Agus Purwanto, who is an author of Universe Verses (In Indonesian), presented the Holy Quran messages on the science explorations. He pointed out that the source of inspiration for the science development can be found through the Holy Quran. This studium generale was attended by students and faculty members.

About IYL 2015

The International Year of Light and Light-Based Technologies (IYL 2015) is a global initiative adopted by the United Nations (A/RES/68/221) to raise awareness of how optical technologies promote sustainable development and provide solutions to worldwide challenges in energy, education, agriculture, communications and health.  With UNESCO as lead agency, IYL 2015 programs will promote improved public and political understanding of the central role of light in the modern world while also celebrating noteworthy anniversaries in 2015—from the first studies of optics 1,000 years ago to discoveries in optical communications that power the Internet today.  The IYL Global Secretariat is located at the Abdus Salam International Centre of Theoretical Physics (ICTP).

The Founding Partners of IYL 2015 are the American Institute of Physics (AIP), the American Physical Society (APS), the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft (DPG), the European Physical Society (EPS), the Abdus Salam International Centre of Theoretical Physics (ICTP), the IEEE Photonics Society (IPS), the Institute of Physics (IOP), Light: Science and Applications, the International Network, 1001 Inventions, The Optical Society (OSA) and the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE).

Patron Sponsors include Bosca, the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD), Royal Philips Lighting, Thorlabs and UL.
